State Thruway Authority officials said planned work this weekend on I-87 on an overpass that was hit nine times last year has been postponed due to a forecast of snow.
The New York State Thruway Authority had planned to close all traffic on the northbound lanes of I-87 from exit 17 in Orange County in Newburgh to exit 18 in Ulster County in New Paltz so a portion of the damaged Brookside Road overpass in New Paltz can be safely removed over the northbound lanes.
“With several inches of snow expected to fall Saturday, Jan. 5 night into Sunday, Jan. 6, the Thruway Authority has decided to postpone this work for the safety of all involved," they said.
In addition, the Plattekill Service Area will remain open.
Officials said the repeated strikes have resulted in considerable damage to the steel that supports the overpass and decreased the amount of weight it can safely carry, Authority officials said.
Constructed in 1954, the four-span continuous four-girder bridge carries Brookside Road over the Thruway – one lane of traffic in each direction – in the town of New Paltz.
A new date for the closure will be announced soon.
